This will be the first meeting in a new "first Saturday" track for beginning Linux users. The traditional third Saturday of the month will be geared more toward advanced topics. From Wikipedia.org: In graphical computing, a desktop environment (DE) offers a complete graphical user interface (GUI) solution to operate a computer. The name is derived from the desktop metaphor used by most of these interfaces. A DE provides icons, toolbars, applications, applets, and abilities like drag and drop. As a whole, the particularities of design and function of a desktop environment endow it with a distinctive look and feel. Unlike in Windows, with its one-desktop-fits-all approach, Linux makes available a wide selection of desktop environments. Two of these have long been the favorites: KDE and GNOME. If you are using any of the major Linux distributions, you are likely using one of these desktops. This meeting will explore the two major desktops so you can get a feel for which you prefer. If you are already familiar with one, then it will be a good opportunity to learn about the other and you might just learn a trick or two about your desktop of choice! There will be plenty of time for socializing and a geek-out, so feel free to bring a system you want to hack on or show off or get help with. ======================================================================= TALUG Meeting Announcement ======================================================================= Topics: Open Source Desktops: KDE and GNOME When: Saturday, December 3, 2005 2:00pm - 5:00pm Where: Stautzenberger College 5355 Southwyck Blvd Toledo, OH 43614 Who: Presented by the Toledo Area Linux Users Group (TALUG) Open to the general public Intended for Linux beginners *** Linux distributions on CD will be available FREE of charge. *** *** Be sure to request in advance!
