Meeting Notes
I think we had a very nice meeting. SmoothWall is awesome and Ron Blanchett of the MonroeLUG gave a super presentation.
People arrived gradually. Eventually a total of 16 people were present. After some technical difficulties with the headless firewall box (No Keyboard found... Press F1 to Continue.), the presentation was ready to go. That was at about 3:30pm. So, we got a late start. Since we had some new faces, I gave an introduction of the group, what we're about, and what we're up to. I talked about the O'Reilly LUG program, the distributions that we had available, and next week's meeting at the Murchison Center. Finally, I shut up and let things get underway.
Oh, I also passed around a sign up sheet and took everyone's picture for the members page. We're going to start making that mean something again... Speaking of members, we got $50 in donations at the meeting tonight. Go, members!
So, Ron covered the basics of SmoothWall: what it can and cannot do, what sort of hardware it requires, etc. He then gave us a live demonstration. We also attacked the box and it dutifully logged all of our attacks. It's really a slick little package...
After the presentation, people chatted for a bit, but then people were looking to bust out and get something to eat, so the meeting ended early.
Oh, if you're interested in other Linux firewalls, give Astaro a look-see... Originally, Ron had hoped to include Astaro in today's meeting as well, but due to time restrictions, it had to come out.
Ron is also working on a MythTV presentation. Stay tuned...
